Built around a station
Hadley Wood barely existed before a station opened on the Great Northern line in the 1880s. The large Victorian and Edwardian houses that followed, and the private estates built since, give it a character all of its own. It sits in the borough of Enfield, although its EN4 postcode and its neighbours are Barnet's.
Hadley Common and Monken Hadley
To the west lie Hadley Common, a surviving piece of the old Enfield Chase, and the village of Monken Hadley around its green and church. The Battle of Barnet was fought on this high ground in 1471. It's a lovely area for a walk, and a Hadley Wood cab back from the common or from the golf club is a regular request. High Barnet and its High Street are just over the hill.
